48th Summit: Last of the White Mountain 4000 footers

Moriah, my last of the 48, has been conquered, and none too soon!  I'm leaving in two days to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (from the 48 4000 footer challenge to the 7 summit challenge? That escalated quickly... literally).

I was able to get some last minute training in with some great winter-hike enthusiasts: Sarah, Lauren, Sterling, Ryan, and Tony.  Tony seemed to enjoy his first winter hike.  Well, except for the last half mile to the summit, but then again, nobody seemed to enjoy that part.  But we left Boston around 7am and drove through gradually worsening snow all the way to Gorham, NH, which is the location of the Moriah trailhead, way the hell in the north of NH.

There was snow, like, everywhere.  I guess that's usually how snow works.  Time to break out the microspikes.  Except the conditions were really awkward for them: the snow was slippery, but it wasn't very deep, and there was no ice.  So we just kept scraping against rock, which led to a few tumbles.  Quite a few tumbles if your name is Sarah M.F. Holland.  But the hike was fine.  Except for the last half mile.  I don't know what it was, but it was mentally exhausting.  I was ready to be done.  And Tony's jokes went from like 3 jokes/min to 0.5 jpm.  Rough.  But then, hey!  Summit-town USA!  It was freezing!

BOOM.  48th and last White Mountain 4000 Footer completed.  We celebrated by ass-sledding down most of the mountain... and then by celebrating with alcohol at my house back in Boston.
"Take a picture so we can get down from here."
Alternate caption "It's frikkin freezing in here Mr. Bigglesworth."  ANYWAY.

So that's done.  This might be the first New Years resolution I've accomplished: to finish the 48 by the end of 2012.  AND NOW IT'S TIME TO REFLECT.

Setting a goal to hike these mountains is retrospectively pretty sweet.  At first I was against the whole theme of checking things off a list, but I like this challenge not for that reason, but because it got me to go out and hike mountains that I normally wouldn't have.  It was a great incentive to just go outside and hike.  And I met a lot of great people along the way... well I guess not met (although Michelle and I did meet some great people on Hale), but some great friendships grew as a result of these hikes.  So really, I'd just like to extend a huge thank you to all the people that helped me along the way, either physically or... mentally?  Emotionally?  What's that thing that women have?  Feelings?

Trip statistics:
Highest Mountain: Mt. Washington (6288 ft)
Shortest Mountain: Tecumseh (4003 ft)
Net Elevation Gain: 0 ft (Yeah, I came back down every one of them.  Sorry I'm a douche, jk I'm not sorry.)
Favorite Hike: Prezzie Traverse
Second Favorite Hike: Carrigain
Third Favorite Hike: Pemi Loop
Favorite Mountain: Mooselauke (I just wish we weren't inside a pingpong ball at the top!)
Least Favorite Mountain: Zealand (seriously fuck that guy)

Using the Hiking Binary Rating Scale, which I invited to indicate: 0 - would not hike again, or 1 - would hike again, the only 0's on the list are:
Zealand
Waumbek
maybe Galehead

But so many of them are really awesome, and there are a few that I DEFINITELY want to hike again.  Namely Mooselauke, the Bonds, and the Prezzies.  I look forward to help others on their quests to hike the 48 now!  ALUMNI.

Hello Dr. Highness Ogangan,

I am a deeply religious man with a terrible affliction.  Most hospitals don't know how to help me, so I have turned to non-conventional powers instead.  Up until now, nothing has worked, but I think the Universe is sending me a sign with your message.  I am very interested to try your powerful spells.  The "magical money" and "automatic promotion in office" spells sounds intriguing, but I'm especially interested in your healing powers.  Please tell me what I have to do so that I may feel the healing embrace of your magic spells.

I am in your debt,
-William Smith

Thank you for your help and enlightenment.  You are a gracious, kind soul.  It is clear that you are a truly powerful shaman to perform such a service over the internet.  I am in your debt.  Here is my information:

It is good to know that this problem will be easy for you to handle with your spells.  You mentioned that I should not contact other spell casters.  However, for about a week I have been in contact with another spell caster.  He has also said that he can cure my sickness.  What do you think I should do?  It seems I am inundated with spell casters.

I just want to be healthy again.  How should I proceed?

Hello Mr. Mike Bongani,

That was a test, and you passed with flying colors.  Mike, can I call you Mike?  Mike, you've got gumption, and I like that.  You're a straight shooter.  You can go straight to the top.  What I'm trying to say is I want you to work for me.

I run a large, multinational corporation, mostly investing in new technology.  And there's a job that I think you'd be perfect for.  It doesn't require any special skills, and in fact, you can do it remotely.  You wouldn't even have to change locations (we would pay for you to come to the U.S. if you prefer, but you don't have to).  I know you are qualified because you have people skills.  You know how to talk to people and assert dominance over them, and that's really the core of what we do here.  If you're interested, I can provide more information on what your role would be.

The salary is $413,500 annually, but that is negotiable.  One time holiday bonus, vacations days, medical plan.  Get back to me if you're interested Mike, because I need you on the team.

Well Mike, I'm glad you asked.  I knew you had balls.

Basically what you'd be doing is finding new customers and getting in touch with our current customers.  You'd handle contact information, banking information, and respond to questions (nothing technical).  It's the kind of job that needs a lot of customer interaction, and you seem like the right kind of guy for that.

The first thing I'll need is just some basic contact info (name, address, etc.) and your current resume.  Then I'll look it over just to check the boxes and ask a few questions here and there and then I'll hand it off to HR.  You should expect a job offer within a week.  Nothing too taxing, since I already know you're the guy I want.

So just email me your contact info and your resume and we can go from there.

Talk to you real soon, Mike.

Hiking the Carters: A Magical Foray into "Almost Winter"

I am approaching the finish line for hiking the 48 4000-footers of the White Mountains, and this past weekend I hiked the Carters, which put me at number 47.  Just one more to go, and then New Hampshire is MINE.

The Carters were a really fun hike.  A bit on the longer side (about 15 miles), but nothing difficult enough to make me curse the gods.  And there was surprisingly no snow and minimal ice - it was barely winter up there.  Just a pleasant stroll up a mountain, along a ridge line (got some great views), and back down a different trail.
We've got the Presidential Ridge... somewhere back there

I traveled with Sterling and Mike, who are experienced hikers, so our pace was pretty impressive.  Also, we had some great conversations along the way, including re-hashing our previous idea of creating an Appalachian Trail relay that we had come up with while hiking Owl's Head.

Due to the fact that we started hiking pretty late (10am - Yikes), we didn't get down to the end of the trail until about an hour after sunset, so we had to whip out our headlamps and try to avoid the icy patches.  The other thing was that when we finished hiking, we were still about 2 miles from where we parked the car, but luckily some hitchhiking assuaged that issue.

If I had to sum up the Carters hike: it was a pleasant hike with some good views and my knees were in no way exploding by the end.

Cabot!

This was my first solo hike in a long time, and it was really cool.  I decided to take a vacation day since work was getting a bit stressful and I haven't hiked in like two dog-years (I've decided I'm going to try this unit of time out as a serious scientific measurement).  And I only have a few more of the 4000 footers left to hike in the White Mountains to complete my 48, so I decided to go for Cabot, which is in the middle of nowhere, like seriously near Canada or something.  It's cool though, because I've been getting into this "History of England" podcast recently, so I was mentally enthralled the entire drive.

Side note on the podcast: I finished listening to the almost-200-episode-long History of Rome podcast, and it was pretty awesome, so I wanted to improve my brain while I sit in a car for four hours.  And I realized that I know nothing about England between when Rome abandoned the island until, like, WWII.  So I'm learning some veritably important stuff.  And it's really entertaining. Check it out.  END OF SIDENOTE.

Anywho, I continued listening while hiking, which I hadn't done before.  The hike itself was a relatively flat and enjoyable first few miles over recently fallen leaves.  Quaint as fuck.  The last 1.5 miles become a mountain, but not too difficult.  There were even some decent views off both sides of the mountain at the top by some weird house-like edifice.  I don't know what it was or why it was there, but I minded my own business and went about my way.  The hike was fairly easy, but I really liked it.  I saw a couple dogs along the way and finished the 9 miles in about 3.5 hours.  And then another 4 hour drive back to Boston...

Sorry, I took some pictures but I'll be damned if I expend the energy required to get them off my camera and onto my computer.  So just imagine whatever you want it to look like.

My conversation with Stella Armondo

UPDATED. AGAIN!

Whelp.  It happened again.  Yet another stranger (aka "friend I've never met") decided to attempt to scam me with a very legit email.  This one is a little more clever than my encounter with my dear friend Kofi.  Here is the history of our correspondence.  Tensions run high, but I think that deep down, we both grew a lot as people, and I count Stella as one of my closest friends.  I'm sure she feels the same way.

Subject: GET BACK TO ME ASAP, ITS VERY URGENT I HEAR FROM YOU !!

From: Mrs Stella Victorie Armando
To: undisclosed recipients

Hello,

My name is Mrs Stella Armando.
I know you must be wondering who I am but don't worry about that I know you can help me.
Please find a place in your heart and listen to me because I have been looking for
someone to help me and not just someone but trusted and genuine person who will not
betray my trust. Although i have gotten some people but my spirit tells me to write you
directly to ask for your help on this issue because what am talking about is huge fund/
consignment that runs into millions of dollars and i wouldn't want it to waste or for
the corrupt government in Libya to get hold of it. The consignment and fund in question
is deposited in my late husband's name Mr Carlos Armando, in a security company and i am
the next of kin to receive the fund since he is dead. But as I will have to tell you why
I cannot receive it here and I would have love to if I have the chance, is because
the consignment/fund was deposited by the late president, President Muammar Gaddafi who
was killed during the problem in Libya and my husband alongside who was the financial
advicer died in an explosion which made the consignment and fund to be forgotten and
have no trace. And currently if I will have to transfer it here in Libya, my surname
will match with my late husband's name as regards people that their families worked with
the formal president and they will confisicate the fund/consignment, but if another name
from a different location comes for claim as the beneficiary/next of kin, it will be
released as fast as possible without hassle for it will be seen as an offshore transaction
and has nothing to do with anybody that worked for the late President. Please as soon as
I get your response, I will like you to receive the consignment on my behalf and please
act fast as i am running out of time. I will also write the Security Company that i will
like the whole consignment and fund deposited under their custody by my late husband be
transferred to a very close relative, so we are safe, i mean 100% safe. So you will have
to contact them. If you have accepted to help me, please reply this email so i can send
you the details of the security company were it is deposited as they will be waiting for
your email or phone call to commence transfer immediately. I shall be sending you the
neccessary documents regarding the consignment/fund deposit and also the security
code/key to unlock the coded deposit account. Waiting for your urgent response.

NOTE:  This transaction is 100% genuine and no risk of any kind is involved

Dear Mrs. Stella Armando,

I can't tell you how sorry I am for your loss.  I myself had a close relative die in an explosion-related disaster, so I can understand what a rough time this must be for you.  Please let me know if you need someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.  It must be a difficult time for you, so I want to help you out in any way possible.

The urgency in your email subject-line was immediately noted, so I'm writing back as quickly as I could.  If I were in your shoes, I certainly wouldn't want the corrupt Libyan government to confiscate your husband's funds.  I'd love to work with you in order to turn your plan into a reality.  It seems like a very unfortunate situation you've found yourself in, but based on your husband's history and connection to Muammar Gaddafi, it certainly makes sense that a covert operation is required.  It seems very James Bond-y to me.  I'll have to think up of an appropriate code name for myself.  But until then, let me know how I can help out.

Sincerely,
Samwise Gamgee

I decide that despite the fact that my email contains my first and last name, I'm going to throw a curveball right at the beginning.

My name is Samwise Gamgee.  You could say that I work "under the radar" from time to time, which I created a made-up name "Christopher Severino" just to avoid telemarketers and such.  My real name is Samwise Gamgee, but you can call me Sam.  You asked what name I really want to use for myself, and I've been thinking about that a lot since your last email.  It definitely needs to be a great codename for something this top secret; you are correct there.  I was thinking maybe "Dr. Amazing" or "Batman," something along those lines.  As I haven't really been in a situation like this before, what do you suggest?  Do you still want me to call you by your real name, or would you like a secret codename as well, like "Dark Jones" or "Madam Secrets?"  Let me know which you prefer.

Attached is a photo of myself, as you requested.  Again, I just want to know that I'm there for you on this.  Waffles and I are on the case (waffles is my cat, see attached picture).  I'm looking forward to this transaction, and I eagerly await your response.

Sincerely,
Sam Gamgee
aka Dr. Amazing or Batman

Hello Stella Armando,

Contacting you was one of the more pressing matters of my afternoon, but your response in the last email was a bit confusing.  I'm not sure how you would be able to recognize me, so that's kind of unbelievable and makes me doubt your story.  I hate to do this, but I'm going to need a picture of yourself if you don't mind, just to verify your identification.  If you could send me a picture of yourself holding a sign that says "Hello Sam Gamgee," it would indicate to me that you are in fact who you say you are.  I appreciate it, because I just want to make sure this is a legit business transaction.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,
Sam Gamgee

Hi Stella,

At this point your logic doesn't make sense at all.  Why would I have something to hide; you're the one who contacted me.  Before I give you my phone number I just wanted to make sure you are who you say you are, which is a logical decision from my point of view, as you would no doubt agree if the situation were reversed.  I have already sent you a picture of myself, as you requested.  Your refusal to give me anything to go, even after I already sent you a picture of myself and Waffles, makes me question what you're telling me.

I'm sure this is just a little bump in our transaction, because given the top-secret nature of the situation, I'd prefer to trust you.  After I verify the picture with the sign "Hello Sam Gamgee," I'll definitely want to move forward with our business by giving you my phone, fax, identification information, etc.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you,

Sam Gamgee

How do you expect a woman like me to go and hold a big paper that was written

don't think I can
do that because am above that and if really you want to help me it

Hello Stella Armondo,

Thank you for sending a picture, it definitely helps with the trust issue we seem to be having.  I don't want there to be any enmity between us, so I just wanted to clear up my reasoning.  I don't see why holding a piece of paper would be a difficult endeavor, because one piece of paper weighs roughly 1/100th of one pound.  I apologize if that task seemed daunting to you; I guess I just assumed you would be able to handle it.  I certainly don't want you to "jump from the mountain."  I sincerely apologize my inquiry knowing that you find "holding a single piece of paper" and "jumping off of a mountain" to be equivalent requests.  But your picture does indicate to me that you are willing to trust me, and I really do want to help you with your unfortunate situation.
Might I ask how the explosion that killed your husband occurred?  It is a bit out of the ordinary as far as deaths go, and it is such a tragedy.  I just wanted to understand the circumstances so that I can avoid a similar situation.
I can definitely send you my phone number, but the recent earthquake knocked out more of the phone lines in my area.  As a result, email is probably the fastest and most effective method of contact until they fix these lines, which will hopefully happen in the near future.  Or if you are so inclined, I can send you my home address.  Let me know if that information would be helpful, or anything else I can provide.  Oh and you never got back to me on whether we should be using codenames from now on.  Would that be preferable considering the top-secret nature of our conversation?  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Sincerest regards,
Sam Gamgee

Hi Stella,

Thank you for your message.  Yes, I agree, it is completely ridiculous that the earthquake knocked out our telephone lines in the area.  Luckily no one in my family was hurt in the aftermath.  Thank you for your support.  Luckily only the phone line was affected, but that should be up and running in a few days once they fix the nearby transformer, which was damaged in the devastation.  The cable lines are routed through titanium-lithiumsteel cables underground, which I guess is why I still have my cable internet connection.  Only a few of the buildings near me were damaged, but I was lucky to escape the brunt of the damage.
Since email and postal correspondence are currently the best options, I will provide my address:
112 Bag's End
Apartment 3
Shire, TX 77304
Before I give out any more information, I wanted to clear up any trust issues you're still feeling.  I am the one who sent you my contact information, picture, and address at your request, and you only grudgingly sent a picture of yourself, not even holding the piece of paper as requested.  If you want any more information that what I've given you, you are the one that needs to prove your story is real.  Just tell me a little about yourself so that I know I can trust you.  Using your codename is fine with me.  Thanks for understanding, and thanks for your concern about the earthquake.

Sincerely,
Samwise (Batman*) Gamgee

PS. I threw the "Batman" into my name just in case we are using our codenames now.

Dear sam,

I have told you about myself in my previous email but anyway I am from
Argentina and
I lived in Libya with my husband who was the financial adviser to the
late president.
During the problem in Libya, my husband was among the explosion that
was fired to
the TC building in Tripoli killing at least about 35 people so I was
left alone and when
i was packing out from Libya i found the deposit certificate with some
files of the
consignment/fund which I started investigating and found out it was
deposited in a security
company and as I heard in the news about confiscating everything owned
by anybody that worked with the formal government I had to leave with
the document and started looking for
some genuine persons who will help me receive the fund on my behalf,
since i was used as
the next of kin. If i go myself, my surname will trigger the sanctions
and the whole deposits
will be confiscated and I will go empty handed, but according to the
head of operations
of the security company, they said I should look for external or
offshore receiver so they
can process and send the fund to the person but it must be outside
Africa. That was when
I contacted you to help me. So i still need your phone number that is
very necessary
because i can't run this with you without talking to you, email
message is not enough to me.
What we are talking about here is huge deposits and not coins. If you
are ready to help me
please state it in your reply so I can forward you the details of this
transaction. Waiting for
your urgent response.

For the code name you can still call me Stella/

Dear Codename Stella,

It seems that you've led a very interesting life, thank you for that information.  I will also tell you a little bit about myself.  I was born and raised at Bag's End, but I've moved around a lot since then (Texas, UK, Mordor, etc.).  I went into the railroad industry, but after one train-related-explosion too many, I moved to metallurgy.  Pretty ordinary life, nothing spectacular.  But judging by your run-on sentences and lack of punctuation, I can tell that you're a busy woman, so enough about me.

As I mentioned a few times before, the phone lines are being worked on, but I think right now they're first trying to clean up the wreckage left by the terrible earthquake that came through here.  My phone number is 91-13-065-340.  Once the lines have been fixed and settled, I'll let you know.  Until then, I'll be eagerly awaiting your emails.

It's funny that you mentioned that "these are huge deposits not coins."  I actually deal a lot with the coin industry, shipping, collecting, trading, etc.  Coinage is actually a focus as part of my business.  It's a shame you aren't dealing with coins, because I'd be willing to pay a fair amount for specialty coins.  If you or someone you know is looking to sell, please let me know.  Until then, I look forward to your next message.

Thanks and have a great day,
Batman

Hello Stella,

Thank you for the compliment of saying that I talk too much.  I would also like to compliment you, because it has been an honor thus far doing business with you: you are probably the biggest fan of the telephone that I have ever seen.  Alexander Graham Bell must be so incredibly proud.

But getting back to this transaction: yes, I am ready for the details, because I'm sure the corrupt Libyan government cannot be easy to placate at this time.  Please send me the details in the next email so that I may verify them.

Any word on specialty collector coins that you mentioned yesterday?

Hope to hear from you soon,

I haven't heard from you at all today and was getting very worried about your health.  I know that I have to stay optimistic, but given the nature of this transaction, I can't help but imagine the worst.  I keep thinking that these corrupt Libyan officials have kicked down your door, ransacked your house, and violently took you hostage.  Are you ok?  Of course I want to go through with this transaction, but first I want to make sure that you are safe.  Do you need help in any way?  Is there something I can do?

Please let me know that you are doing well.

Hello Stella,

The news of your illness breaks my heart; I am so sorry to hear that.  And I definitely don't want you to become bordered due to my phone situation; that sounds just awful and downright painful.  I just spoke with the foreman in charge of rebuilding the transformers in my neighborhood last night.  I asked when he thinks they would be completed and he couldn't give me a date.  And then when I pressed him to see if he could go any faster, he became angered with me and he struck me.  So I guess to answer your question, I don't have a date for when phone calls can go through.

If you send me the details to the security company, perhaps I can talk to them through email.  Perhaps we can set something up, where if I open an account with them on your end, we wouldn't have to wait for the earthquake clean-up process.  Please let me know if they have a department that specializes in coin transfer, as I am willing to pay for rare coin shipments for our metallurgy studies here.

Affectionately yours,

In your first email you said that the point of this transaction was so that you would not be traceable back to the original funds?  Wouldn't me saying that this is in reference to you, being next of kin kind of miss the purpose?  I'm getting a little confused here because it sounds like your story is a bit misleading.  Could you "pls" clear that up for me before I contact the security company?  Thank you, I look forward to your detailed response.

Dear Sam

Thank you for your mail. i want to clear you regarding your question. My name
was used as the next of kin by my late husband, although I didn't know until
his death. Before I found the documents for this deposits, the new government
has already declared that any funds and property belonging to the officials
that worked with the last regime should be seized/confiscated. Then when i saw
the certificates I contacted one of the officials were the deposits are kept,
Mr. Franklin Kwame, told me that if I should come in person to transfer the
deposits that I will be nabbed and the deposits seized, already others has
been confiscated already including some very large amount of money belonging
to the Son of the late president and currently under the custody of the new
government. I would have love to do the whole process myself, but due to the
fact that my surname matched with one of the officials that worked with the
past regime which was my husband, I believe the will look into it very well
and definitely the deposits will be seized and I will be left with nothing.
Assuming it was the same surname and after investigating and they found out
it was a different person, then it is a different ball game. The finance
company official was the person that advised me to look for an external or
offshore receiver to transfer the deposits because it will be assumed it was
just for a business transaction and nothing more. Infact he told me it was
how other people were doing it successfully so I decided to look for a trust
worthy, non greedy and reliable person to help me receive the consignment/fund.
And I suggested it is better for me to give out some percentage to the receiver
for helping me. Currently it is still an urgent issue but I cannot do anything
except I get a trust worthy receiver, who will process and transfer the
consignment through a courier means and then have the fund deposited into his
account. It can also be done bit by bit. This is how I found you Sam.
Immediately this is done I shall be coming over to to have my money
depending the shearing proportion we agreed on. Please try and contact the
Security Company so we can have the whole deposits by Monday or Tuesday.
Endeavor to let me know the out come so I can know how to help and everything
can be done online, you don't need to come to their office for any issue.
Waiting to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards
Mrs Stella Armando

Hi Stella,

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.  Our town has always had a problem with stray dogs, but recently they've been organizing; forming up into groups and wreaking havoc upon the townsfolk.  Before, it just seemed like they were testing our dog-catching forces for weaknesses.  They remember.  This past weekend was really a bad dog-attacking period.  One of my aunts was attacked by a small, yet vicious pack.  She's in the hospital now and is expected to recover, but it has been a rough weekend for my family.  As if the earthquake wasn't enough, am I right?  But that is why I wasn't in contact, and I'm sorry for that.  I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

I am absolutely interested in the coin business, so please send me the contact information of this master of coin that you've located.  And also please send me the contact information so that I can email the security deposit folks.  I think you may sent it in an earlier email, but I hadn't committed it to memory yet.

Thank you Stella, I eagerly look forward to reading your next message,

Hello Mr. Franklin Kwame,

Your message has been received and acknowledged.  Getting you my identification should be no problem.  I'll just need to wait access for my fax machine.  You see, there was a terrible earthquake here and it knocked out our telecommunication lines.  I still have cable internet access, but my fax machine (circa 1991) runs off telephone lines.  Before I send this to you, I will have to wait for the engineers to fix it.  There has been some delay as packs of wild dogs have been attacking the engineers who are working on the issue, but that should become available shortly.  In the meantime, I will provide you with my picture for identification purposes.

I have to comment on your company name and how incredibly apt it is.  "Rich Trading Securities" really cuts to the core of what your business is all about, doesn't it?  The name alone alleviates any doubt as to whether you are a real security company.  And the fact that it has "Rich Trading" proves that you are a business only interested in the transfer of large sums of money.  I look forward to doing business with you.

Subject: PERSONAL DATA NEEDED TO PROCEED.

From: Samwise Gamgee
To: Franklin Kwame

Dear Franklin Kwame

I am writing to confirm the receipt of your mail regarding the security department and the implications it has with our business.  You know very well that it was impossible to provide my driver's license as the extensive earthquake damage left our town in near ruins for a large chunk of time.  However, I sent you two (2) identification photos in previous emails which concluded the matter.  You never replied back.  It is incredibly unprofessional to imply that it was my fault that you had not responded for such a long time as it is 100% your fault.  I'm going to have to ask for an apology if we are going to continue working together; one in which you do NOT blame me for your shortcomings.  You are going against promptness code 21, and I'm afraid I'm going to send your details to the Department of Efficiency and Punctuality so that they can sort everything out.  You may be contacted by a member of this committee for your lack of responsiveness.

In the meantime, I will accept any heartfelt apology so that we can continue with our transaction.

Thank you,
Dr. Samwise Gamgee, PhD.

 Dear Mr. Kwame,

Thank your for your nearly sincere apology.  It proves that you are an upstanding gentleman who will clearly rocket through the ranks of your financial institution with intrigued high profile.  I will ask the committee of the Department of Efficiency and Punctuality to cease and desist in their investigation.

One final matter before we continue with the transaction.  It is important for me to note whether you are a cat person or a dog person.  This is not a joke: it is important to me in that it will help me determine whether you are the type of institution in which Stella and I can continue working with.  The difference between cat people and dog people is universally regarded as one of the most important aspects of a personality.  In order for us to finalize our transaction, please answer honestly and seriously whether you prefer cats or dogs.

I thank you for taking this seriously, because I don't have time to deal with any institutions that feel that they "too good" to answer a question like this.

Dear Franklin Kwame,

This is the second time that you have completely disregarded my request when simply answering the question would allow us to continue with our business.  I take offense to your complete lack of professionalism.  And the mere fact that you consider the question "do you prefer cats or dogs" to be "irrelevant" shows that you are not serious at all and that you know nothing about the business world.  Every business school in the United States teaches the fundamental differences between cat people and dog people and how this difference relates to cooperative business interactions.  Your total disregard to this link and your continual disregard to my simple question tells me that you are not ready for my business.  Stella Armondo would be disappointed and I am sure that her late husband is spinning in his grave.  You should be ashamed of yourselves for the way that you've treated us throughout our entire conversation.

Dear sir or madam,

I regret to inform you that the director of one of your accounts, Mr. Franklin Kwame, has gone rogue.  The account regarding myself (Samwise Gamgee) and Stella Armondo has been ignored due to his negligence.  His failure to respond to account inquires is devastating at best.  Not only do I require the reactivation of my incorrectly closed account, but it is clear that Mr. Franklin Kwame must be removed from his position.  His people skills are atrocious and his external focus are non-existent.  In addition, it is my expert opinion that Mr. Kwame may have Asperger's Disorder, and he should be checked at a psych ward for additional mental illnesses.  He should also be tested for rabies.  Once the account has been reactivated, I hope that I can speak to a sane account director and that I can complete my very urgent business (which has been delayed by Mr. Kwame).

Thank you for your time; I know that Mr. Kwame has tested the patience of all of us,

Please let me know when you get us set up through another bank, because this one was no good.

Your request is very confusing to me, because you should already have this information on file.  It seems extremely suspicious that you would somehow lose my information.  How can I be sure I'm talking to the same people?  I looked up the word "dumurrage" and it turns out that this isn't even a word.  The closest thing I could find is "demurrage," which means an "undue detention" of a boat or train.  So I don't understand how such a thing applies.  I'm going to need some sort of explanation as to why you seem to have lost my information, because it's starting to sound like your company is not very organized.

Hello Stella,

It appears that you are still interested in calling me by my fake name, but I forgive you as I'm sure it is merely the result of a memory lapse due to your illness.  You can call me by my real name, Samwise, or by our agreed upon code name, Batman, if you so choose.  I am sorry to hear of your malady; it brings me great sorry to learn that you have been too sick to operate a computer for the last four months.  I think the last I heard from you was on July 4th.  I hope that you and your family have avoided the rabies outbreak that I've been hearing about in your area.
I contacted the security company a while ago, and was put into the account director Franklin Kwame.  He was a sadistic villain who was bent on stealing your funds for himself.  Luckily, Rich Trading Securities removed him and put me into contact with another account manager, but to no avail.  He has not responded to my emails for over three weeks.  It is quite an unprofessional company.  I assumed that the transaction was dropped.  As I am extremely busy with my coinage/peanut business, I was unable to follow up with a company that was uninterested in doing business.  Perhaps we should seek a new trading security company for the transaction.

Your faithful servant,

obliged to carryout our official duties as expected and ruled by

Thank you for your corporation and total commitment in this transaction.
I write on behalf of Mrs Stella, who has been persuading me to
make sure I conclude every process involved, to have the content of the account

Hello Mr. Mensah!

It is so grand to hear from you again.  My new year has gotten off to a rocky start: our newly constructed infrastructure (re-done after the disastrous earthquake last year) has been utterly damaged again.  It turns out that the new telephone poles were placed over a major fault line, and the construction triggered a series of volcano eruptions the likes of which our little Shire has never seen.  But aside from that everything is going exceedingly well.  I hope the same is true for you, minus the tragic volcanoes.

I haven't heard about your update for my security deposit.  By now you are most likely ready to send my account money to me.  Please don't hesitate to ask the information you need to send it to me.

Waiting on your urgent reply,
Lt. Samwise Gamgee

This is actually a spin-off email chain with Stella Armando.  The entire conversation started getting complicated, so I broke it off into it's own post.  But rest assured; I'm fairly confident that the "Stella Armando," "Security Bank," and "Nelson" character are all the same person, or work together as scammers.  I had to poke and prod "Stella Armando" for her contact in the "coin" business, because apparently I am a coin businessman who buys bulk coins.  I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW SOMEONE CAN COME UP WITH A DEFINITION OF THIS.  But I guess they believe my story?

 Dear Nelson,

It is good to hear back from you.  I had figured that you weren't interested in our business deal, but it pleases me to no end that you are still interested in doing business with me.

I have recently acquired about 500 metric tons of 16th Century U.S. Pennies, but I am still very much interested in procuring Japanese Pesos.  Please tell me how much you are willing to sell.  I would like to purchase between 20-30 metric tons of Japanese Pesos and am willing to buy them at $8,000 per ton (which as I'm sure you're aware, is roughly double face value of the coins).  Please get back to me with how much you are willing to sell.

I am also very intrigued by your new offer.  I am in fact looking to get my hands on a great deal of peanuts and charcoal.  Exporting these into the country will be a bit difficult, but after getting through the appropriate paperwork, I'm sure we'll be able to make this happen.

So in conclusion, please let me know how much you are willing to sell of
1. Japanese Pesos
2. Peanuts
3. Charcoal

We can discuss the selling rates as well.

Thank you,
Dr. Samwise Gamgee

Hello Nelson,

I'd be delighted if you called me by my actual name from now on.  Samwise Gamgee, Dr. Gamgee, whichever suits you.  I am unsure as to why you decided to start calling me by a different name all of a sudden, but I accept your apologies.

It is good to hear that you have so many Japanese Pesos that you are willing to sell!  These rare coins hold a special place in my heart, which is why I mentioned that I was willing to pay more than double the current rate ($4000 per Metric ton).  It seems that you drive a hard bargain, asking for over triple the current rate.  Perhaps we can compromise, agreeing on $10,000 per Metric ton?  Let me know if this offer is pleasing to you.  I am looking to get my hands on about 50 Metric tons of Japanese Pesos, which as you know works out to about 6 million (6,000,000) coins.  Please let me know if this is possible.

As for the peanuts, I noticed that you gave quite a bit of detail as to the quality of the product, but you failed to mention the amount of Sharkin.  I'd like to know how much Sharkin we're talking about before I decide to buy any.  And as for the charcoal, what is the Kryptonite-ratio we're looking at for these?

Thank you for this information.  If we can come to an agreement on the coin pricing, we can start discussing payment and shipment details.

I look forward to hearing from you,
Dr. Samwise Gamgee

Hello Nelson,

You of course are right about the Japanese peso price.  My apologies.  I must have read your phrasing incorrectly, or perhaps I had a computer virus, because the text on my screen sent signals to my brain in the form of the number 12000 instead of 8000.  The $8000/MT is an agreeable offer.  I will of course need the appropriate documentation forms for large coin imports.  I'm sure you're very aware of it, but I'll attach an example of what I'm talking about.  Just a simple form granting legal rights for shipping the coins to me.  Please send the appropriate form to me acknowledging the legal intent of shipment so that I may send the total deposit to your bank account of choice.  You may address the form to my coin business: General Gamgee's Coin Emporium, LLC.

Regarding the other products, I must admit that I don't know where this hostility is coming from.  I never joke about such matters.  Never. I merely wanted the specifics in order to ascertain the peanut and charcoal quality.  Do you perchance know the types of peanuts?  If you are in possession of Beetle-Peanuts, those tend to have the Sharkin quantities I'm interested in.  There is about 1.5 grams of Sharkin per peanut in Beetle-Peanuts.  That's about the range I'm looking for.  Any less than 1.1 g makes for a bad peanut, and anything over 1.9 g is just ridiculous.  As for the charcoal, I was hoping for really low Kryptonite-ratios, maybe between 1-5%?  Please keep me informed as to your stock.

To ensure prompt payment of delivery, please include the appropriate importation forms (please see the example that I have attached so that you know what I'm talking about.

Thank you,
Samwise Gamgee

Hello Nelson Chuma,

It is good to hear back from you.  I understand the ups and downs of the business world and how busy one can get from time to time.  After all, I run a coin import/export business, and the coin market is soaring right now!

Since our last conversation, I've imported a few tons of Japanese Pesos, but I'm still looking for a few more.  I'm interested in importing about 75 metric tons of Japanese Pesos, which it sounds like you already have.  I believe we last agreed on $8000/metric ton.

In addition, if you are in possession of any Beric Dondarions (an extremely rare coin from Westeros), I'm looking for between 100-200 metric tons.  I'm willing to pay as much as $14000/metric ton.

Please let me know what you have in stock and we can get the ball rolling on this.

Dear Samwise,

I received you message and it was nice to hear that you still need the coins which I have
made available. I have the export license which I have been using but the
customs require that I provide the certificate of legal procurement and authorization
of currency distribution from the Ministry of Finance. Please am working on that but will
send you the letter of intent regarding the export of large volume of currencies. In not less
than 3days, I shall make available all the necessary document for export. Normally my
customers do come down to my office from different location to purchase it, and am only

I shall make provision for that within the time specified in this email.

Dear Samwise,

Shipment depends on how you want it, but normally I use through
Sea/vessel transport. At times some clients will prefer Air transport
because it is faster. It all lies on how you want to receive it.
But with such quantity of goods, I will suggest transport by sea
which I normally do. You will also let me know how you want the
packaging to be, because it has to meet the standard of ISO and
NACDS.

For the quantity of coins you requested, its available for you and my colleague is willing

Please let me know when you send the correct Certificate of Distribution.
